‘The Art of Metallica’ Exhibition Coming to San Francisco’s Haight Street Art Center

'The Art of Metallica' comes to San Francisco with the original paintings for 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets'.

San Francisco’s Haight Street Art Center will present ‘The Art of Metallica’, an exhibition devoted to Metallica‘s visual identity across more than 40 years. It runs November 5, 2026, through January 10, 2027, at 215 Haight Street, open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., with free admission and sponsorship from Amoeba Music.

The curatorial advisor is Brian Lew, a photographer of the Bay Area thrash scene and co-author, with Harald Oimoen, of ‘Murder in the Front Row: Shots From the Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter’. “San Francisco has historically intertwined visual art with music,” Lew said, describing the show as “a story of individuality, evolution, rebellion, and artistic vision that continues to grow.”

Kelly Harris, the center’s executive director, stressed the bond between the city and the band: “San Francisco has always been a place where art and music fuel one another. Metallica’s story is San Francisco’s story. We’re honored to bring that legacy home.” The Haight Street Art Center opened in July 2017 as a nonprofit space dedicated to poster art and printmaking, with a print studio and gallery.

The centerpiece will be the original paintings that became the covers of ‘Ride the Lightning’ (1984) and ‘Master of Puppets’ (1986). The latter, with its field of white crosses and string-pulling hands, was painted by Don Brautigam from a sketch by James Hetfield; the ‘Ride the Lightning’ cover, with its electric chair, was the work of AD Artists.

The exhibition will also feature original concert posters and flyers, from the earliest gigs to the most recent tour; a section dedicated to Pushead, who has created numerous designs for the band; sketches showing the evolution of the logo; fan banners collected at shows around the world, original fan art given to the band, photographs, ephemera and vintage merchandise, plus a look back at Metallica’s collaborations with Bay Area sports teams.

There will also be an interactive area with a Stern ‘Metallica Remastered’ pinball machine and a mosaic portrait of the band by John Arena, made entirely of Dunlop guitar picks and signed by all four members and the artist. The portrait is the prize in a Metallica sweepstakes with Fandiem, with proceeds benefiting All Within My Hands, the band’s foundation.

Another highlight is the original marquee from The Old Waldorf, the San Francisco club where Metallica played in 1982. It was there, on November 29 of that year, that the band played its first Bay Area headlining show, with Exodus and Vicious Rumors, in a lineup of Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. That night produced the live demo ‘Metal Up Your Ass’. Lew was there as a photographer: his shot of Mustaine and Hetfield with a pitcher of beer has circulated among fans ever since.

“A generation after the Summer of Love, the Bay Area drew Metallica the way it had drawn so many musicians before,” the exhibition’s announcement notes, placing the band in the same lineage as Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley‘s psychedelic posters for the Grateful Dead. Metallica formed in Southern California but moved to the Bay Area in early 1983. In 2021, Mayor London Breed declared December 16 Metallica Day in San Francisco; Ulrich recalled then that the band first played the city in September 1982 and that they “felt finally like we belonged someplace.”

The band, now Hetfield, Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, played four nights at Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros in September 2024 as part of its M72 World Tour. No plans have been announced for the exhibition to travel to other cities.
